Driver’s licenses from other member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area are valid in Germany. Driver’s licenses from other countries must be transferred within the first six months of your stay in Germany, provided that Germany is your primary residence. This period can be extended only if you are planning to stay for less than 12 months in Germany.
In order to transfer your driver’s license, it may be that you must take either a theoretical or a practical driving test. Please contact the Driver’s License Office (Führerscheinbehörde) in the Citizens’ Service office for transportation for more information.
