Outpatient Care (all forms of care apart from hospital care) The doctor’s offices of physicians in private practice are the first contact points for patients. You can visit the doctor of your choice. You should visit a general practitioner (Allgemeinarzt, Hausarzt) first. In cases in which a specialist is required, your general practitioner will refer you to one. You are required to pay ten Euros to the first doctor whom you visit per quartile. The same is for your first visit to the dentist in each quarter, as long as your visit is not for a preventive check-up only. If you have to visit further doctors during the quartile at hand, then please request a proof of payment slip along with your referrals. If you do not have this proof of payment, then you must pay a further ten Euros upon your next doctor as well. It is required that you bring your health insurance card with you to every doctor’s visit.
Persons insured by a state-mandated health insurance provider do not have to prepay for most health services. The doctor’s offices are directly reimbursed by your insurance provider.
Persons insured by a private insurance company must pay directly for all health services. Afterwards, he or she must apply for reimbursement from the private health insurance company or as stipulated by the policy.
Please refer to the telephone book or lists of doctors here (for Potsdam), here (for the federal state of Brandenburg), or here (for Berlin). We will gladly assist you if you are looking for a specialist who can speak your language.
If you should need to visit a doctor outside of normal visiting hours or on the weekend, please refer to the local newspapers or here for current information pertaining to which doctor’s and dentist’s offices and pharmacies are open after hours or on the weekend.
Inpatient Care Patients have the right to complete treatment in the hospital in Germany when symptoms or an outbreak of a serious and acute illness make it necessary for one to go to the hospital. Except in the case of emergency (or as a private patient), a referral slip from a physician in private practice is required for treatment at a hospital.
