Germany has a comprehensive social insurance system. It is comprised of health, long-term care, retirement, unemployment, and accident insurance. If you receive a stipend/fellowship, then you are freed from the social insurance system except for health insurance. Upon employment, registration for the social insurance system takes place over your health insurance provider or your employer respectively.
Health Insurance | In Germany, health insurance is required. Thus, please check whether your health insurance policy in your home country provides for health care for both doctors’ and hospital visits outside of your home country. Your health insurance company must then declare in writing that your health insurance policy is valid in Germany. If this is not the case, then you must take out an additional health insurance policy in Germany for the length of your stay. Family members travelling with you must also have their own health insurance policies.
Staying in Germany as an Employee | Before formally entering into employment with the University of Potsdam, you must already have a valid health insurance policy in Germany. You will need your passport to register for health insurance. In some cases, health insurance providers require a letter of confirmation from your employer in order to take out a policy. This letter should include the length of your employment. The premium for health insurance policies from state-mandated companies is comprised of a percentage of your wage (14.9%). In order to take out a health insurance policy from a private health insurance company, you must fulfil two prerequisites. First, your monthly gross income must be more than 3,975 Euros (yearly income: 47,000 Euros). Second, you must already have had a health insurance policy from a private company for at least 36 months. For employment with the University of Potsdam, a letter of confirmation in German from your health insurance company is required. Private health insurance companies determine their premiums according to the risk potential of the prospective policy holder.
Staying in Germany with a Stipend/Fellowship | If you receive a stipend, then you must take out a health insurance policy from a private insurer. You can do this either in Germany or in your home country. Oftentimes, stipend-giving institutions provide assistance with finding the appropriate health insurance policy for your stay in Germany. Please contact your stipend-giver for more information.
