School attendance is required for all children between six and 15 years of age. Attending school at public schools is free. Payment of a monthly fee is required to attend school at private, chartered, or international schools. Parents choose the form of schooling for their children. There are admission procedures for attending a private or chartered school or a public Gymnasium (the highest level of secondary education in Germany). Children attend public schools according to where they live. You are only allowed to send your children to a school outside of your area of residency when the school in question has an available spot.
You must register your children for school at a school of your choice or at the school in your area of residency. Please contact the respective school director and ask about the application procedure.
Necessary Documents
- certificate of proof of residence (Meldebestätigung), to be obtained in the Citizens’ Service Office or the Welcome Center in the Citizens’ Service Office
- your child’s/children’s birth certificate(s)
- residence permit
- certificates of prior achievement in school
