Employment
If your spouse would like to pursue employment or study in Germany, then he or she must obtain the appropriate visa (for study purposes, for doctoral studies, or as a guest scholar) before coming to Germany. It is very difficult to change the purpose of one’s stay in Germany.
For citizens of the EU-15, employment in Germany is unproblematic. Citizens of the EU from the new member states must seek approval from the local Employment Office ( Agentur für Arbeit). The Employment Office must approve employment for citizens from countries outside of the EU as well.
When you receive a residence permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) as a highly-qualified employee, then the members of your family have unrestricted access to the German labour market. As a rule, this does not apply to family members of guest scholars.

Attending Classes at the University of Potsdam
Spouses of guest scholars can attend lectures and seminars at the University of Potsdam as guest students (Gasthörer) for up to eight semester hours per week (Semesterwochenstunden) in the various programmes of study offered at the university. Please contact the respective instructors of the courses that you would like to attend with a guest student slip (Gasthörerschein). You can begin participating in classes after payment of your fees (between ten and 30 Euros, depending on how many hours of classes per week) and confirmation from the International Relations Office (contact person: Dr. Hunger, House 8, Room 40).
